To mark the upcoming 2024 Townsville Dry Tropics Waterways Report Card, the Healthy Waters Partnership is proud to support the TOWSA Cameron & Co Art Prize.
Focussed on connections to water, swimming, and Townsville’s local waterways, the Art Prize is OPEN TO ALL, and prizes are generous.
Schools, amateurs, experts, and community members of all kinds are encouraged to submit their art for a month-long exhibition at Townsville’s Drill Hall Studio.
“This is a water-loving town,” says our Executive Officer, Kara-Mae Coulter-Atkins. “Healthy waters matter to us for many reasons, not least because we swim, fish, paddle, and dive in our marine and freshwater waterways. This exhibition will capture the essence of this connection to swimming and water, and we can’t wait to see the submissions.”
Prizes are:
$1000 for overall winner
$500 for best emerging artist
$200 people’s choice
$200 for best youth artwork — submitted by an artist of school age.
Cleveland Bay waters key to TOWSA tradition
The TOWSA Cameron & Co Art Prize celebrates the 70th birthday of the Magnetic Island to Townsville Swim — a legendary event among open-water swimmers.
From 1954-2007, the swim was conducted with shark cages, limiting the field to 7-8 swimmers. Since 2007, the event has been cageless and unassisted, organised by the Townsville Open Water Swimming Association (TOWSA), with entrants now coming from around the country and world to participate.
“When I’m in the open water, there’s a feeling of freedom I can’t find anywhere else,” says Julie Boxsell, Townsville nurse, distance swimmer, and visionary behind the Art Prize. “Our rivers and ocean fuel my body and my mental health. For me to be healthy, our waterways must be healthy.”
