Champions of

the Bohle

These crews have their sleeves rolled up support the health of Townsville's Bohle River Sub-Basin.

Why back the Bohle?

Because it backs us!

Despite only covering about 10% of Townsville’s land area, almost 50% of our population is packed into the Bohle River Sub-Basin. This means half of our town is gardening, driving, building, planting, and operating in the Bohle. It bears a significant urban load.

In our 2023 Waterways Report Card the Bohle River Freshwater Sub-Basin received a ‘D — poor’ grade for water quality.

The Bohle Sub-Basin supports not only a significant portion of our population, but it is also home to a diverse array of animals, fish, birds, and plants.

The Town Common Conservation Park and a protected River Fish Habitat Area fall within this catchment, and extensive seagrass meadows at the mouth of the Bohle River provide food for dugongs, turtles, and many other creatures.

“Small changes to our daily behaviours in Townsville could make a big difference to the Bohle’s health, says our Executive Officer, Kara-Mae Coulter-Atkins.

In our Champions of the Bohle series we celebrate the crews of people already at work in the Bohle basin to bring it back into balance.
